The choice of the kind of phosphor at home is determined by the effect that needs to be obtained. However, a constant glow often creates inconvenience, especially if it is bright and intense.
How to make ordinary paint shine
There are several ways to provide a luminescence effect at home. You can, for example, buy self-luminous paint, in which the phosphor components have already been dissolved. Often such a paint is called a neon, although there is no neon there. The glow is created by the luminescent pigment contained in ordinary acrylic paint.
The effect of this pigment is as follows. During the day, artificial and natural light( this is mandatory) must fall on such a paint, which accumulates with acrylic enamel, and then radiates into the outer space with the onset of darkness. The radiation process usually lasts from 8 to 12 hours - a period sufficient for the room to be filled again with external light. In this case, the surface layer of paint again stores energy, which it will give in the evening.
Since the process is cyclical, no breakdown of the phosphor components occurs, and the emissivity of the paint can persist for a long period of time. However, such paints are quite expensive, and besides, they have a very limited palette of shades. Therefore, in the room, for example, a multicolored glow of walls, simulating a neon, is impossible.
At home, it is much easier to make such a neon paint with your own hands. To do this, you need to purchase a set of fluorescent pigments. They have universal application, and therefore possess the following positive features:
- High frost resistance( which is more important when painting cars, but it is quite acceptable if using such pigments to paint part of the wall of a dark hallway or utility corridor, cellar, attic space).
- Neutral chemically, so do not cause dermatitis and allergic reactions. This is especially valuable if the phosphor pigment is supposed to be added to highlight the part of the wall of the nursery.
- Do not collapse under the influence of high temperatures( most compositions are stable up to + 30 ° C).But if you hit the wall of direct solar radiation, it is better, nevertheless, to cover the wall, painted with acrylic paint with phosphor additives, curtains or a dense curtain.

Self-luminous additives include chemical compounds that dissolve well not only in acrylic, but also in other types of household varnishes( alkyd or polyurethane).The varnish must be transparent, otherwise the final color of the paint may differ from the desired one.
Anyway, before making a self-luminous paint at home, it's worth to check the final effect on a small and inconspicuous part of the wall, where the external light will constantly fall.
How to choose the type of self-luminous coatings
Technology will be determined by the ultimate goal. You can, for example, use such a paint to select a part of a painting or a panel on the wall, but you can apply it to paint a large area of the surface. Depending on this, the type of fluorescent pigment is selected.
Glow in the ultraviolet rays is especially effective when lighting the facade of the house. By themselves, such pigments do not glow. In order to create a "neon" glow of the exterior, it is necessary to send there a sufficiently powerful ultraviolet lamp or even a searchlight with a UV filter. This solution is expensive and difficult to implement.
Phosphors can glow independently: for this, it is sufficient to direct the light flux to the surface for 20-30 minutes. Energy is accumulated by light-reflecting material and then given to the surrounding space. Before this, it is necessary to choose the right color of the phosphor so that the glow does not irritate the eyes and harmonizes with the overall color solution of the room.
Reflective pigments glow constantly, if they receive external lighting. Such coloring is advisable to make for illumination of dark areas of the homestead territory, focusing the light directed to the painted wall with the help of light reflectors or mirrors.
We make neon paint on our own
At home, the base is taken with acrylic, as the safest. However, when PVC panels are painted with their own hands, polyurethane paint is usually used. The process of obtaining a self-luminous paint is as follows:
- Pour lacquer in a glass or ceramic container where the pigment of the previously selected color is added. The concentration of the pigment depends on the desired degree of effect, but usually should not exceed 25-30% of the base.
- As the density of the composition increases, a little( up to 1%) of the organic solvent should be added to the container, after which the paint should be thoroughly mixed.
- To make the luminous composition more intense, a little coloring matter can be added to the paint.
- When painting with your own hands, it is necessary to constantly mix the composition, since phosphors are heavier in weight and can fall to the bottom of the container. As a result, the color will be uneven.
Preparation of walls for painting does not have any features.
It is important that the original surface is uniform in its texture and clean. It should be noted that on lighter surfaces the effect of the self-luminous walls will be more expressive.
